Information about the Nonprofit Blog Exchange

I volunteered to coordinate the pilot-version of Deborah's idea of nonprofits exchanging blogs for a day.

What is the Nonprofit Blog Exchange?

The Nonprofit Blog Exchange will be a day (or whatever is decided) where nonprofit bloggers will exchange blogs. This is for any blogger who works for or with mission-based organizations.

There will be a list of blogs and I will randomly assign them a blog to exchange with. The blogger can then write an entry in their blog about the blog they have visited and/or write comments in the blog they have exchanged with.

Logo Explanation

While coming up with an idea for the logo for the Nonprofit Blog Exchange, I remembered a poem I read once about crayons. This poem fit well with the idea of the exchange and the idea I had of designing the logo.

The poem I was remembering is called The Box of Crayons.

Here is the quote from the end of the poem:

"We are a box of crayons
each of us unique,
but when we get together
the picture is complete."

How does this relate to the Nonprofit Blog Exchange?

Everyone in the nonprofit sector is unique. Some are from different countries or cultures. Some have different areas of expertise.

Each organization is different. They have different missions. They have different strengths and weaknesses.

By pairing up nonprofit bloggers with different backgrounds, they will be able to help each other out.

It will be interesting to see what happens with the Nonprofit Blog Exchange.

Emily,

Great volunteer project! Just a minor question, all of this needs to be in english? I know some spanish speaking groups who could benefit from the idea.

Keep up the good work.

When you say "blog exchange" or "exchange blogs" what exactly do you mean?

Are people going to be exchanging the ability to post on other people's blogs? Are they only going to write about/cross promote other blogs?

I really need some more info, some that is a bit less jargon heavy, before I can decide if the organizations I work with should participate.

Thanks in advance for the details and thanks for the efforts in bringing about a dialog, even if I don't understand how you intend to do it.

Oops. I entered mine before you wrote this, and it is in Italian. Maybe participants could use automatic translation? Sure, it produces unpublishable gibberish, but if the result is taken with a grain of salt, you can still get the gist of the original (1).

If it is not possible, may I still have access to the project in order to review it in the ADISI blog?

(1)see Automated translation: Babelfish 101), and the part on "Exposition "La Terre Vue du Ciel" pour les non-voyants" in my Yann Arthus-Bertrand "La Terre vue du ciel" - Earth from Above message for Net-Gold

Claude,

I do not want blogs in other languages for this pilot version. We are just testing this out and seeing what happens with the exchange.

The translation of webpages in other languages is a great idea for the future.

The list of blogs participating will be posted to the blog after the exchange. You will be able to review them then.

I'm looking into whether a blog would be useful for our non-profit agency. Does anyone have any success stories re. using them for your non-prof? Did it help pull in readers who then became donors, volunteers or otherwise? Is this technology still too new to know these outcomes? We are a very small agency (48 full and part-time staff) and need to conserve our energies for ideas that are proven useful.

Thanks in advance for any help or website resources you may have.

Hi Emily,

I am doing the blog exchange for my blog www.nonprofiteer.com and I am really glad you set this up.

I am not sure what your long term plans are for this. I read another series of blogs called "Carnival of the Capitalists" where people get together and write weekly on a theme relevant to entrepreneurship on various blogs. One of the participating blogs hosts the other blogs for the week, in essence linking to the other blogs. This both gets lots of people discussing one topic in particular and creates a lot of reciprocal linking, therefore introducing new blogs around.

Once the first exchange is over, I am not sure if you are planning on additional exchanges, but we could also consider a “Carnival of the Charitable” or something like that.

Reactions?

Best,

Scott
